Jean Bartoo grew up in the Cleveland area near the Cleveland Municipal Airport. Jean became interested in aviation at a young age. When she was a child during the 1930s and 40s, she would watch National Air Race pilots fly over her backyard. After she graduated from high school she worked as a riveter at the Bomber Plant at the Cleveland Airport. Upon graduating from college, Jean became a stewardess with Pennsylvania Central Airlines (now United Airlines). Years later Jean became a librarian at the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics, the predecessor of NASA. During this time she met her husband Edward Bartoo, an Aeronautical Engineer. The couple traveled by plane around the world. Along with her interest in aviation, Jean began a professional career in education. She served as the President of the Ohio Association of Elementary School Administrators. Jean also served as a consultant and instructor with the Educational Council of America. Jean Bartoo owes much of her success with her love of flying. On May 10, 2013 Jean Louise Bartoo passed away. Jean was a member of the International Women's Air & Space Museum since 2002 and a Life Member since 2009. She will be greatly missed.
